Stranger

Estren reimagined – out 31st July 2024

TEYR is thrilled to announce the upcoming release of their anticipated remix album ‘Stranger’. This collection of remixes is a reimagining of ‘Estren’, TEYR’s acclaimed 2nd studio album. The trio invited 10 artists and groups to lend their unique visions to tracks from ‘Estren’ resulting in a captivating exploration of sound and identity – 10 ever stranger, wanderings beyond the bounds.

Notable among the roster are the three artists behind the singles leading up to the album release:

Georgia Ellery (Jockstrap, Black Country New Road) delivers an abstract and glitchy collage of ‘Kuusilta’ weaving in voicenotes from TEYR rehearsals.

Aphty Khéa infuses “An Tros” with hypnotic beats, creating a mesmerising dancefloor filler fitting of the 17th century psychedelic Cornish language poem that inspired the original.

Stick in the Wheel’s Ian Carter brings a heavy backbeat and dark ambiance to their remix of the title track “Estren,” offering a fresh perspective on themes of travel and identity.

Joining these talented artists are a.Blubox, Stick in the Wheel, Fools Rock, Uyarakq, Rho, Rad Orchestra, Spacey Basement Cult, Georgia Ellery, Aphty Khéa, and Fishclaw, each bringing their unique flair to the remix album.

Together this collection forms ‘Stranger’, a nod back to the original ‘Estren’ (which translates from Cornish as ‘Stranger’ or ‘Foreigner’) while also symbolising the transformative nature of remixing as a form of translation. TEYR invites listeners to join them on this journey into the realm of ‘Stranger,’ where tradition meets innovation and the familiar becomes wonderfully unfamiliar.

Kuusilta [Georgia Ellery Remix] out Tuesday 18th June

For the 1st single Georgia Ellery (Jockstrap, Black Country New Road) remixes Kuusilta, an intricate piece for strings and accordion, giving it a dark uncompromising overhaul with only glitchy glimpses of the original melody. In addition to the original album audio, Georgia chose to work with rehearsal voicenotes and demo tracks from just before TEYR went into the studio for Estren, in effect giving us a collage of Kuusilta, before, during and after its creation.

Estren [Stick in the Wheel Remix] out Thursday 4th July

Stick in the Wheel’s remix of our title track ‘Estren’ comes from the band’s guitarist Ian Carter who produces beats under the name EAN. They bring a heavy backbeat and dark feel to this 3rd single, with re-pitched vocals, big side-chained sound and lolloping groove. The original track ‘Estren’ itself explores the edgier themes of travel, immigration and identity summed up in the word ‘Estren’, Cornish for ‘Stranger.’ With Stick in the Wheel’s track record of flipping English folk narratives, they made a perfect fit for reworking this vision.

An Tros [Aphty Khéa Remix] out Friday 19th July

Greek electronic producer, singer and composer Aphty Khéa remixes ‘An Tros’, our treatment of a 17th century Cornish language poem about fishing for monsters featuring cellist Abel Selaocoe. Aphty’s remix is at once an infectious dancefloor filler and a hypnotic homage to the trance-like original.
